History of Shoreditch
From the 12th to the 16th Century, Shoreditch was the site an Augustinian priory called 'Halliwell' (named after a former Holy Well).
On the site of the priory, James Burbage built the first playhouse in England, known as 'The Theatre' (there is a plaque on Curtain Road). Shakepeare's plays were performed there as well as the Curtain Theatre which was built a few years later (there is also a plaque for this theatre in Hewett Street, off Curtain Road). The Curtain Theatre is where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet first got notoriety. As Shakespeare grew more successful, he then had the Globe built in Southwark to run his plays.
During the 17th century, wealthy traders and Huguenot silk weavers moved to Shoreditch and developped a textile industry centered around Spitalfields. Many of their houses still survive today.
During the 19th century, a furniture industry developped in the area which is commemorated in the Geffrye Museum on Kingsland Road. During this same period and up to WW2, Shoreditch became a famed for its music halls. Many were later transformed into cinemas but the bill boards for the shows there are in various museums, including the V&A.
By the end of the 19th Century, Shoreditch also became an insalubrious area reputed for crime, prostitution and slumb dwellings. It was heavily bombed during WW2 and badly redevelopped in the post war period.
Since then, particularly in the last 15 years, Shoreditch has become one of the trendiest areas in London. Initially attracting arty types because of its proxiimity to the City, its cheap rent for studios and accomodation and its diverse population, Shoreditch is now full of clubs, bars and restaurants while property prices have risen dramatically. Many of the furniture factories have been changed into loft apartments fetching high prices. Also associated with Hoxton Square, the are is particularly attractive to young people who like going out without being in a particularly touristic area. Properties vary from ex-coucil high rise flats to Georgian house to large loft conversions in old factories.
