History of Knightsbridge
Knightsbridge was originally a small hamlet outside the City of London, between the villages of Chelsea (Chelsey), Kensington (Kensing town) and Charing. It was named after a crossing of the River Westbourne, which is now an underground river.
For centuries the area was renowned as the haunt of highwaymen, robbers and cut throats targeting travellers on the western route out of London. The fortunes of Knightsbridge were transformed in the 19th century.
Knightsbridge is home to many of the world's richest people. It has some of the highest property prices in the world. 14 out of the top 200 most expensive streets in Britain are in Knightsbridge (Source: The Times, 2007).
Reputedly an area for the super rich, Knightsbridge is also a shopper’s paradise with Harrods, Harvey Nichols and all the top designer shops on Sloane Street nearby. Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are nearby. The area has many large properties, many built around quiet squares or with private gardens.
