History of Oval
The Oval is world famed for its cricket ground. In the mid 18th century, Kennington Oval was a market garden and was, as it still is today, owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. Surrey County Cricket Club was set up in 1845. The Duchy of Cornwall granted ‘a lease of the land for the purpose of a cricket ground’. The lease was signed on 10 March 1845 with the Otter Trustees, who held the land from the Duchy of Cornwall, 'to convert it into a subscription Cricket Ground'.
It rapidly became popular and in 1868 there were 20,000 spectators at the Oval for the first game of the 1868 Aboriginal cricket tour of England, the first tour of England by a foreign side.
Although the Oval used to be the largest playing area in the world, it still is the largest in the UK (There now is a larger one in Pakistan)
Interestingly, the gasometers nearby were built at around the same time in 1853.
There are a few old properties and many ex-local authority flats in the area. It is walking distance from all the gay clubs in Vauxhall. Oval really is at the intersection of a few areas (Brixton, Clapham, Vauxhall and Kennington) while being a stone throw away from the West End making it a very easy area to access restaurants, cafés, pubs or clubs locally or ‘in town’.
