Interesting facts about The Gherkin (as it goes up for sale)

London's Gherkin skyscraper has been put up for sale. The tower, which goes by the official name 30 St Mary Axe, is in the City and is expected to fetch offers around £650 million. It follows financial troubles causing the skyscraper to go into receivership in April.

Stephen Down from Savills told BBC News: "We've started the ball rolling. Interest is expected from Chinese, Hong Kong, Singaporean and North American investors, among others. I suspect there will be an iconic element to this [sale]."

Some interesting facts about The Gherkin

At any one time, 378 people can be transported in lifts at speeds of up to 6m per second.

The building has 24,000 sq metres of external glass – the equivalent of five football pitches.

It is over three times the height of Niagra Falls (180m to be precise)

The largest circumference of the Gherkin is only two metres less than the building’s height

During the early stages of construction, the grave of a young Roman girl was found. While the building was finished the girl was preserved in the Museum of London and then re-buried at the base of the skyscraper when it was finished.

The lounge bar and restaurant (for tenants and their guests) at the top is the highest in London

Over 35km of steel was used to construct the Gherkin.
