Here’s a brilliantly gingery gingerbread recipe

Gingerbread is perfect for Christmas and, well, anytime really. This very easy recipe is not only great for making the classic gingerbread man shape but can be used to bake your own spiced and festive stars or trees. We love them to eat but you can also hang them as tree decorations. Here’s the recipe.

Get yourself…

Bicarbonate of soda – 1 teaspoon

Finely granulated or Demerara brown sugar – 175g

Golden syrup – 4 tablespoons

Ground ginger – 2 teaspoons

An egg

Butter – 125g

Plain flour – 350g

Then do this…

Sift the flour, bicarb of soda and ginger into one big bowl. Then stir in the butter and sugar until it’s all combined together. Beat the egg and then add that with the syrup to the flour. Mix it all up until it’s nice and thick and you can roll it out onto a floured surface. Use cutters of your choice.

Bake the treats at 160 degrees C for 12 - 15 minutes until golden. Then leave them on a wire rack to cool down. Try and resist having a nibble too soon, you’ll only burn your tongue. Decorate with icing however you like.

By the way: Most supermarkets will sell the star, tree and snowflake cookie cutters. Or if you prefer you could always make our personal favourite – the dinosaur. Probably best to save that one until after Christmas though.
