We love Holborn

Living in Holborn, London

A trendy spot right on the fringes of London’s historic centre.

Holborn’s charming aesthetic, combined with its proximity to the West End and Bloomsbury has helped make the district one of the most popular places to live in the capital in recent years. While it might appear a little stuffy on first glance, under this formal veneer there’s a bustling independent scene buoyed by trendy bars and top restaurants.

Well-liked by the jet set, Holborn is now an area filled with media savvy professionals and the burgeoning foodie scene reflects their immaculate tastes. The district has a healthy mixture of modern architecture and traditional bare structures, making it a very appealing place to call home. It’s a village smack bang in the centre of London.

Holborn property

Sometimes referred to as ‘Midtown’, as it links the West End and the City, property-wise, Holborn is very much an area in flux – and the main direction is definitely up.

It’s one of the areas of London benefitting from some serious regeneration money, and what was once primarily a commercial area is now becoming a real residential hotspot. In fact its price gains in the last couple of years have generally outstripped its near neighbours (up 23% in the year from November 2014 to November 2015 alone). With Crossrail cutting through the upper section and both Tottenham Court Road and Farringdon within walking distance, plus the proposed Garden Bridge linking with the Southbank, prospects look even better.

For any lawyer it’s an obvious choice, with the Inns of Court in the south of the area, while the presence of several university campuses makes it a firm favourite for both student rental accommodation and overseas buyers wanting to invest in property for their sons or daughters.

There are only a few family houses available in Holborn, mostly around John Street, Bedford Row and Doughty Street, although when you do find them, the Georgian examples can be spectacular. However, for flats and apartments the situation is better and set to improve still further, thanks to new developments in places like St Dunstan’s Court. Look out too for the various residential redevelopments of office blocks, as well as some rather nice serviced apartments

We say:

Perfect for young professionals who want to be close to the heart of the city without necessarily living there. Holborn is finely poised on the line between central London and the London suburbs, making it a great place to live and work.

The Lifestyle
Even though Holborn is very much in the heart of the city it, and nearby Bloomsbury, have managed to maintain a sort of village feel. With so many professionals here there’s a good mix of places to eat and drink, but things don’t tend to get too wild too often. Everyone has an early start, after all.

Do not expect

Do not expect
Hipsters. They haven’t migrated this far west yet and the thought of being too close to Westminster scares them.

Sights around Holborn

Holborn rich culture

Once frequented by Dickens himself, the rich culture of Holborn is apparent at every turn. The district emanates out from the magnificent British Museum, and the nearby British Library is constantly flooded with students making their way over from the universities and colleges in the area.

Holborn Food

An influx of affluent city types has spurred on something of a gastronomic revolution in the Holborn area in the last few years so it’s easy to find a great place to eat, whatever you are looking for. The district’s traditional heritage also means you’re never too far away from a decent pub, whether you’re after something modern or a throwback to the past.

Shanghai Blues

Shanghai Blues
193-197 High Holborn

Who doesn’t love a bit of Dim Sum? This traditionally decorated Chinese restaurant offers you a taste of the famous dumplings as well as an a la carte menu packed with classics from Asia. But the food’s not even the best part. After dinner, warm up your vocal chords with a bit of karaoke - go on, sing for your supper.

The Ship Tavern

The Ship Tavern
12 Gate Street

The Ship, with its kitsch wooden paneling, maroon -padded bar booths and brass fittings, feels as if it’s been caught in a time warp - and there lies the key to its allure. Open since the 1500s, this traditional boozer is a bastion of real ale and fine pub grub. The Ship calls itself London’s best kept secret. We’ve blown the lid on it, so go and have a look yourself.

James Smith & Sons

James Smith & Sons
Hazelwood House

A family business that’s been going since 1830, this shop sells exquisitely fine, hand-crafted umbrellas. The moment you step through the old school shop front, you can almost smell the quality - or maybe that’s just the wood polish - either way, it’s glorious. As well as umbrellas, you can get hold of fine canes and sticks. Keep the rain at bay and look fabulous while doing so.

All Star Lanes

All Star Lanes
Victoria House

Yes, it’s bowling, but it’s “boutique bowling”. And come on, who doesn't love strapping on those wonderfully tacky shoes for an hour of ten-pin action? Kick your night off with a few games as you sip on cocktails taken from a surprisingly extensive list. On the weekends, expect DJ sets to accompany your giddy glee.

Holborn Gymbox

100 High Holborn

A new style gym in an old school setting, Gymbox is here to twist you into shape, whether you like it or not. From intense circuits and gruelling MMA classes to yoga raves and twerk-orientated sessions, this gym has a new take on almost everything to do with fitness. If you’re seriously looking to get in shape, this is the place for you. Be warned, anywhere that boasts the tagline “new ways to destroy yourself” is probably going to be pretty full on.

174-177 High Holborn

Relax, unwind, and get beautiful. You can achieve all three at the Aveda Institute Salon and Spa. Men and women can choose from a full range of hair, skin, styling and makeup treatments that are certain to leave you feeling like a new person.

Coffee, lunch, cakes. That’s what it offers and that’s all you really need to know. Perfect for a lunchtime treat, or a caffeine injection first thing.

The British Museum

The British Museum
Great Russell Street

For a cultural day out, look no further than the British Museum; one of the city’s finest, right on your doorstep. Dedicated to history and culture, this grand-looking structure houses over 8 million works, making it one of the largest collections in the world. From Aboriginal art to masterpieces of Greek sculpture, there’s something for all tastes at this incredible museum.
