We Love Whitechapel

Whitechapel

Living in Whitechapel

Welcome to one of London's most exciting and alternative areas.

For those outside London, Whitechapel is probably most famous for its most notorious resident, Jack the Ripper, and his murderous spree in the late 19th century. However, fast forward 130 years, and the area is one of the most unique in London, bringing together a really good mix of classic architecture and industries with one of the most alternative scenes in the capital. With art being at the centre of the area's every happening, it has become one of the most edgy and hip places in the city over the last few years.

Whitechapel property

There’s a good mix of property in the area, from Georgian and Victorian houses through to high rises, ex-council stock and plenty of modern new build apartments.

The area is part of the whole East London regeneration project, and has its own ‘Whitechapel Vision’ redevelopment masterplan. With Crossrail opening soon, when Heathrow will be just 41 minutes away, property prospects (and prices) can only go up.

New developments just a short walk from Whitechapel station include Cityscape, Altitude and Goodman’s Fields. Whitechapel also includes the Spitalfields conservation area, complete with some amazing early 17th century terraced houses.

But whatever you’re looking for, with the area on the up and the City within walking distance, the time to move is now.

We say:

Creativity is at the heart of one of the most exciting places in the whole of London. Whitechapel is one of the trendiest areas around, and with good reason.

The Neighbours
If there is one thing that could be said about Whitechapel, it is that it is massively multicultural. As well as being a thriving area for young arty types who live in the vicinity of Brick Lane, it is also home to one of the UK's largest Bangladeshi communities.

Do not expect

Do not expect
An upmarket atmosphere. Whitechapel is arty and cool, and it is not ashamed to admit it. The place is a hotbed of alternative lifestyles and activities, so expect to see quirky people and interesting things rather than the strait-laced city centre.

You fall in love with
The way the people of Whitechapel embrace how different it is. There's nowhere else where everyone truly embraces the spirit of an area quite like they do in Whitechapel.

Local transport Transport
Having a car in Whitechapel is basically impossible thanks to the busy roads and the difficulties that you will find with parking in the area. However, there are still plenty of ways to get around. Many of the locals will cycle to and from work, while the public transport network is great. While it's not as well served by the Tube network as other areas in the city, the overground train network has services at Whitechapel, Bethnal Green and Shadwell.

Sights around Whitechapel

Whitechapel Markets

There are a number of exciting markets that bring Whitechapel to life, but none will be as vibrant and exciting as the one on Whitechapel Road, which is open through the week from Monday to Saturday. Here, you can find literally everything and anything, from DVDs and toys to clothing and fresh food. There's a reason the market is a favourite with locals in Whitechapel, and it's a place that definitely needs to be visited.

Whitechapel Brick Lane

Famed for its fantastic street art, Brick Lane is the centre of all that is cool and contemporary in Whitechapel. As well as having some great places to eat or even just grab a coffee, it's well worth a visit for anyone who appreciates art. A walk among the brightly decorated buildings will allow the chance to take in some of the most raw and edgy urban art around. It's a real delight for the senses.

Whitechapel fashion

It might not be known particularly for its fashion, but that doesn't mean Brick Lane isn't a great place to pick up some great loved items. The number of vintage stores around will amaze you, and you can whittle away literally a whole weekend going through the rails and rails of clothes in the wonderful little vintage boutiques throughout Whitechapel.
