Property Soho

Soho Area Guide

Property for sale or rent in Soho W1

You’d be hard put to find such a small area (around one square mile) with such a high concentration of activity, not to mention advantages to buying or renting anywhere else in the UK, let alone London.  Yet despite (or maybe because of) this, Soho still has the feel of a village about it.

Soho Square was originally a hunting lodge, and it’s believed that the word ‘Soho’ actually derives from an old hunting call. These days, of course, Soho is a happy hunting ground for anyone looking for high or low culture and all things in-between.

Soho is home to some of the capital’s finest restaurants and clubs, including the Groucho and Ronnie Scott’s, along with bars, boutiques, cinemas and markets galore. Not forgetting Chinatown, thriving in its South-Eastern corner.

Once home to successive waves of immigrants, Soho later became a favourite haunt of writers, musicians and artists, and still has a bohemian feel to it today. There’s also a thriving gay scene. Notable local residents have included Mozart, Canaletto and Karl Marx and, appropriately enough in such a bohemian area, Casanova.

Useful information for anyone buying or renting in Soho

Transport links – with Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road, there’s a tube station pretty much at each corner of Soho, and you’re never more than a few minutes’ walk away from one, with five different tube lines to choose from.  For more details, see Transport for London

Soho Schools – As it’s such a small area, Soho itself has little in the way of schools and colleges, although there are many good ones very close by. However, it is home a thriving small church primary school. For further information, see the School League Tables
