Property Marble Arch

Marble Arch Area Guide

Property for sale or rent in Marble Arch W1 and W2

In 1828, John Nash designed the arch based on the triumphal arch of Constantine in Rome. It was originally erected on The Mall as a gateway to the new Buckingham Palace (rebuilt by Nash from the former Buckingham House). The problem was that it was found to be too narrow for grand coaches, so in 1851 it was moved to its present location, which marks the western end of Oxford Street.

The arch stands close to the site of the Tyburn gallows (sometimes called 'Tyburn Tree'), a place of public execution from 1388 until 1793. It’s actually on a large traffic island, accessible via a maze of gloomy underground tunnels, unless you fancy braving the traffic.

Strictly speaking, the only people allowed to pass through it are members of the Royal Family and one of the artillery regiments of the British army. Which is slightly ironic, as looking at the Marble Arch area as a whole, perhaps more people pass through this general area than anyone else in London. It’s also the location of one of London’s busiest road junctions.

But don’t let that put you off. There’s plenty to see and do in the area. If you tire of having perhaps London’s grandest open space, Hyde Park, on your doorstep, then head off for the UK’s largest Marks & Spencer, just down the road. But be sure to stop off on your way out at Speakers’ Corner at the corner of the park, where on Sundays you can hear amateur politicians, social campaigners or downright weirdos (and it can be hard to distinguish between the different categories) declaim on any subject under the sun.

The area is extremely well-service by both restaurants and shops, from the many delights of Edgware Road, through to the famous names of Oxford Street and Bond Street. There’s also a multiplex cinema on your doorstep.

Properties in Marble Arch

Marble Arch was, and to a large extent still is, an exclusive area. Nearby Apsley House was once the home of the Duke of Wellington, and its address was simply ‘Number One London’, as it was the first house you came to once you’d entered the tollgate from the north.

If you’ve ever played Monopoly, then you’ll know that Park Lane, which runs south from Marble Arch, is second only to Mayfair if you happen to land on it. And that’s not a bad yardstick to today’s property prices. But look to the one of the lesser well-known streets, and properties start to become more affordable, and from a rental point of view, extremely popular, with a cosmopolitan and affluent local population.

There’s a good choice of flats, ranging from compact studio apartments through to large and luxurious apartments.  Most are rentals, both long-term and short-term, but there are also a few attractive properties for sale.
