Property Kennington

Kennington Area Guide

Property for sale or rent in Kennington SE11, SE17

Kennington appears in the Domesday Book as Chenintune, later Kyning-ton, which translates to ‘the place of the king’, and has been associated with royalty since even earlier, King Hardacanute dying there nearly a millennium ago.

A royal palace was built in Kennington by Edward, the Black Prince, and various kings up to Henry V11 used to live there from time to time, but it was dismantled on the orders of his son, Henry VIII. However, even today, the Duchy of Cornwall maintains a substantial property portfolio within Kennington.

Kennington Park and St Mark's Churchyard now cover the site of Kennington Common. In 1746, the Surrey County Gallows, at the southern end of the Common, was used for the execution of nine leaders of the Jacobite rebellion. The Common was also where the Chartists gathered for their biggest demonstration in 1848.

Kennington Park was the destination of the first motorised double-decker bus in 1899 (the bus service today is still good, as it happens) and is near where Charlie Chaplin grew up and lived.
Today, the main thoroughfares of Kennington Road and Kennington Lane boast many fine restaurants, bars and shops, and it’s a highly desirable area in which to live, being only a stone’s throw from the West End and the Houses of Parliament.  Indeed, many MPs have homes there, and Kennington boasted the dubious honour of featuring most prominently in the MP’s expenses scandal.

London’s only gin distillery, Beefeater’s, is also situated within Kennington. And if playing boules is your thing, the place to go is Cleaver Square.
