Property Hoxton

Shoreditch Area Guide

Property for sale or rent in Hoxton N1

The name comes from ‘Hogesdon’, first recorded in the Domesday Book nearly a thousand years ago. Roughly translated, the name meant ‘Hoch’s Farm’. Ben Pimlico was a famous local publican in Tudor times – he gave his name to modern-day Pimlico.

The Hoxton area is a district in the East End of London just to the North of the City. It has distinguished itself in recent years as the centre of trendy and hip; a home to artists, art movements, and other creative types (in Hoxton, even the graffiti is wacky and witty). It’s developed a culture that is completely and authentically its own and has spread this influence far and wide by attracting attention on the international fashion scene, even drawing such greats as Liz Hurley, Donatella Versace and Kate Hudson to its famed Hoxton Square.

The eponymous square is a picturesque oasis, surrounded by bars, restaurants, clubs and art galleries; not surprisingly, the area has a vibrant night life.

Cultural highlights include the White Cube gallery and the Geffrye Museum. Hoxton Street Market provides a wonderful shopping experience; specialising in household goods during the week, and unique fashion, creative art and design works on Saturdays, it’s become a great focal point.

Nearby, there is the Parish Church of the St. John’s Hoxton, named after Reverend John Newton who was the composer of Amazing Grace. The area was home to William Parker, who exposed the Gunpowder Plot – sadly his house is long demolished, but a blue plaque on the site remains. Other famous past residents have included Alfred Hitchcock, who began his career at nearby Gainsborough Studios, and the infamous Kray twins, who were born here.

Property in Hoxton

Hoxton has been gentrified and refurbished, because of the increased popularity and income inflow to the area in recent years turning it into a prime residential area. The area boasts a wonderful mixture of period properties, loft conversions, and modern flats to suit everyone’s desire. The south of the district is very popular, but there are some nice new-builds on the northern side. Property prices are still well on the up, so now’s the time to buy.
