Property for sale or rent in Holborn WC1, WC2 and EC1
The name Holborne comes from a hamlet called Holebourne – literally ‘stream in the hollow’ and once upon a time, Holborn was a real green oasis on the edge of the City. It was in those long-lost days that Elizabethan herbalist John Gerard enthusiastically cultivated the land, being the first to catalogue over 1,000 native species in a classic book of its kind, which can today be seen at the British Museum.
Formerly, Holborn was a major publishing centre, but it also became notorious for prostitution, being the home of the most notorious brothel in London, Mother Clap’s Molly House (or should that be the other way round?).
Today, however, Holborn a highly respectable area, not least due to its legal connections. There are more law firms in Holborn than anywhere else in London, along with a large number of financial firms. Holborn is also home to the Royal Courts of Justice, with, allegedly, over 1,000 rooms and 3.5 miles of corridors.
It also houses Inns of Court such as Lincoln’s Inn and Gray’s Inn. And almost as famous are some historic inns of a more traditional kind. In the last century, 22 taverns were recorded on High Holborn alone, and some, such as the Cittie of Yorke, still survive.
Also worth squirrelling out are the shops – Holborn houses a number of independent outlets specialising in unusual stock, from old maps to hand-made umbrellas.
