Property Bayswater

London Area Guides

Property for sale or rent in Bayswater W2

The name Bayswater probably comes from Baynard’s Watering. Baynard was an eleventh century abbot called Bainiardus, an associate of William the Conqueror, who also gave his name to Baynard’s castle, further east in London.  The ‘Watering’ part comes from the fact that the area was renowned for its clean springs.

It’s appropriate that Bayswater should be partly derived from the name of a Frenchman, because Bayswater is one of London's most cosmopolitan areas, with the significant diversity of the local population added to by having one of London's highest concentration of hotels. There is a sizeable Arab population towards Edgware Road, a large number of Americans and a substantial Greek population attracted by London's Greek Orthodox Cathedral. It’s also the centre of London's Brazilian community.

As you can imagine, there’s no shortage of good restaurants serving just about every cuisine you can think of, especially in Queensway and Westbourne Grove. You’re also really spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping. Oxford Street needs no introduction, and there are plenty of interesting shops along Edgware Road. For some of the best open space in London, Hyde Park is right on the doorstep, but Bayswater also has several leafy squares.

Famous local residents have included Winston Churchill, Alexander Fleming, Stella McCartney, Damon Albarn, Keira Knightley and JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan. Today, a lot of city professionals also live in Bayswater.

Properties in Bayswater

As well as the multi-cultural appeal, Bayswater’s proximity to the West End and Notting Hill makes it attractive to many buyers and renters. It’s easy to reach from Heathrow too.

Architecturally, the biggest part of the area is made up of Georgian and Victorian terraces and garden squares, mostly divided up into flats. Bayswater Properties range from very expensive apartments (and a few houses) to small studio flats. There are also purpose built apartment blocks dating from the inter-war period as well as more recent developments, and a large council estate, the 800 flat Hallfield Estate, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, who also created part of the South Bank complex.
