Property Angel

Angel Area Guide
Property for sale or rent in Angel N1, EC1

The Angel was originally an inn near a tollgate in the Great North Road, and it’s believed that Thomas Paine of Rights of Man fame stayed there. The original Angel was rebuilt as a coaching inn in 1819, and is mentioned in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.

In fact the whole area seems to have been long known for its hostelries, as it was actually a rural resort for Londoners and a place where many vegetables were grown to feed the capital’s populace. By 1716 there were 56 ale-house keepers in Upper Street, and if you broaden the definition out to pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants, there must be at least that many on the same street now.

You’ll find everything you need to furnish your property too, from antiques to new furniture designers or junk shops, in and around Camden Passage. Angel is also well served with supermarkets and a market on Chapel Street. There are small pub theatres, the Almeida (which practically qualifies as West End with the quality of its theatre productions and casts), plus the world-famous Sadler’s Wells.

Until thirty or forty years ago, Angel was poor and rundown; now it’s one of London’s most thriving and fashionable areas, helped by its excellent location. Past residents include Sir Walter Raleigh, Edward Lear, Douglas Adams, Joe Orton and William Hogarth. More modern inhabitants include Colin Firth, Jim Broadbent, Peaches Geldof, Dido and Jimmie Carr. Tony Blair also used to live there; Boris Johnson still does.

Open space is limited, although Highbury Fields is not too far away. However in just about all other aspects – location, housing, culture, shopping and general vibrancy – Angel is hard to beat.

Properties in Angel

Angel is full of splendid properties, including a wealth of magnificent Georgian townhouses, as well as numerous conversions and some fine new developments too. Gardens are often particularly impressive by London standards.  Other areas in Islington, including Barnsbury, Canonbury and Highbury, are similar, although with less in the way of commercial property.

Its proximity to both the City and the West End also makes Angel attractive to companies with a foot in both worlds, and there are many small to medium media companies in this area too. As well as conversions and purpose-built office space, there are a good number of converted warehouses. The Business Design Centre houses many small companies, along with numerous large-scale exhibitions.
